Billie’s journey to becoming a Service Manager…

Eleven years ago Billie was working in retail in a job she found ‘repetitive’ and now she’s a Service Manager leading the day-to-day running of care provider Be Caring.

Her journey in care started when she was inspired by a friend who made the move to work in the care sector. She heard about the flexibility of the role and how much her friend loved it and started her first role as a Care Worker.

She kept her job in retail at the time but within two weeks she knew that she wanted to work in care and she’s never looked back since.

Her passion shone through and within six months she’d made the progression to become a Senior Care Worker.

She didn’t stay still for long though and within another year she’d achieved her second promote to becoming a Visiting Officer.

From there she spent four years as a co-ordinator before taking up the role of Service Manager, where she’s now been for three years.

What Billie loves about working in care..

We’ve spoken to Billie to find out more about what it is that keeps her so passionate about working in the Care Sector with Be Caring. She said:

“It’s the reward side that appealed the most to me when I got the job as a care worker. It was the flexibility too.

“At the end of the day, you go home feeling like you’ve accomplished something and you’ve helped somebody.

“A job in care is just a lovely job making sure you keep people happy and support  people with their needs.

“The progression and development within care is amazing to. When I worked in retail I didn’t know my next step but in care there’s a real development there.

“I started as a carer and would never have dreamed of becoming a manager and that happened for me with a bit of hard work and dedication.

“It’s really flexible too. We get a lot of care workers who can only work mornings or evenings and at Be Caring we’re quite flexible with shifts.

“When I worked in retail it was ever weekend where now we do alternative weekends, so you’re getting your time off as well as a good work life balance.

What traits do you need to work in care?

We asked Billie her opinion on what someone needs to work in care. Here’s what she said:

“You’ve got to be confident when you’re going in to care for people.

“I think you have to be able to adapt to change too because you could go from one person who likes to have a bit of a laugh and a joke, then the next person might want a more serious care worker.

“You’ve definitely got to be able to adapt to your surroundings and be dedicated to your role.”
